SEMESTER 2 - Independent Drawing Homework

For this task we were told to create a illustrative archive of the city. creating 20 drawings of a great range and variety, focusing on lots of different areas that contrast one another. To do this brief, i went for a walk around the town in a sort of linear fashion. I wanted to create a narrative where if someone wanted to, they could follow the same route i did around Worcester, and see if they would do anything different to what i did. Worcester was perfect for this brief, the architecture is constantly changing from hundreds of years of development.

To create a very unique expanded portrait i took the lighting into account and draw accordingly, the day was cloudy to begin with, so in order to portray this feeling, i drew the first few drawings in grey-scale, i think that this effect worked quite well as as you go through my drawings you can get a feeling for the day they were drawn in. As the clouds dissipated i slowly began to add colour to my drawings. The brighter the day became the more colour and larger variety i would use.

When the clouds disappeared for a time, i tried to use full colour, something that i felt was lacking during last semester. While on hindsight doing this meant going slightly off brief, i feel that doing it enhanced my overall piece, so i feel that it was risk worth taking.

I was really happy with how this project turned out, It gives a really unique experience of Worcester city. it forced me to go outside my comfort zone and use full colour in the field, something that i havent really attempted much in the past.  The hardest part of this brief was getting the initial sketch correct, as i have a habit of being a perfectionist so by being out in the field forces you to make very lose quick sketches. It's seomthing that i will have to focus on more in the future.
