Homework Week 3: Still life 'Self Portrait'

For this weeks brief we had create a still life that resembled us as a person at this stage of our lives. For this is chose to draw things that resemble my interests and ambitions, we had to draw our still life in 3 different styles, i found that while i find it hard to draw while barely looking at the page and not taking my pencil off the page. My ability with this technique is improving which is something to be positive about. Then the next drawing we had to do was using Tone and focuing on the negative space on the drawing, with this drawing i went all in and took near 3 hours to complete the drawing, this may have been because i chose to use crosshatching for my shading, i am happy with the outcome, the proportions of the drawing are a lot better than the previous drawing, and were also helped by the techniques i learnt during my proportions life drawing lesson.
Contour Drawing: 40 mins
Tone Drawing: 3 hours

ANIM1003 Lesson 3 (10/10/2016)

In this lesson we focus on composition, perspective and proportions, something ive wanted to study for a good while. During the lesson i finally found out why artists hold their pencils and thumbs up towards things they're drawing, and after learning what that does, it helped me get the correct proportions no end, rather than just trying to guess where things went on the page. The main focus of the lesson was rather than getting a finished drawing, was to ensure the anatomy of the life model was as accurate as possible. The lesson went well and you can already see an improvement in the drawings i did this lesson compared to the lessons previous!

Week 2 Homework: Negative Space

For this week Homework, we were asked to create some Negative space drawings of Household objects that we found interesting. I wanted to make this a challenge so i wanted to draw things, that created unusual patterns and shadows or had a wide variety of depth to them. I feel that i achieved that with the 3 drawings i did.

Drawing 1: After shave bottle
Time taken: 1 hour
Medium used: 2B + 4B Pencils
I chose this subject or the fact it not only created interesting shadow patterns, but it was also see through, which distorted things behind it, which i found really interesting to Draw.

Drawing 2: Spoon
Time Taken: 20 mins
Medium Used: ""
For this object i wanted to go for something that was almost a polar opposite of the last thing i drew, to give a comparison and contrast from the glass to this metal spoon, it gave some interesting shadows which took some work getting down onto the paper but i feel it went sucessfully

Drawing 3: Pocket Watch
Time taken: 40 mins
Medium Used: ""
This pocket watch was given to me by my Girlfriend, so not only does it hold some sentimental value, but it offered an interesting subject to draw. I wanted to tackle trying to draw something intricate like the chain on the watch in negative space to create a challenge for myself, i feel that there is room for improvement but it came out with a reasonable degree of success.

ANIM1003 Lesson 2 (03/10/2016)

For our second lesson we did our first Life drawing lessons with our model for the next 6 weeks, Mel. It was the first time i have done life drawing, and seeing as it was something ive also wanted to do in order to improve my skill as an artist, i was very excited. The lesson went very well, although i did feel as the session progressed further into the evening, i could begin the see the quality of my work slipping due to fatigue, hopefully this will be something that vanishes through time. I was quite pleased with most of my work and my ability to get the correct proportions. I think the things i struggled most with were awkward poses that required a lot of foreshortening, and capturing the likeness of the model, all things that i believe will improve with time.
